A man has been jailed for eight years, with a further two years on licence, after trying to abduct two girls and sexually assaulting one.

Peter Smith, aged 33 from Rothwell, has been convicted of two counts of attempted abduction, one of sexual assault and one of possession of a knife.

Smith attempted the abduction of a 17-year-old girl in Desborough in February.

The girl managed to get the partial registration of the vehicle he was driving and he was subsequently arrested and charged with the offence.

Police officers noted an artist’s impression issued by Leicestershire Police bore a striking resemblance to Smith.

In November last year, he stopped a girl in an alley in Market Harborough, threatened her with a knife and sexually assaulted her.

Smith has been placed on the Sex Offender’s Register.
