Fred and Marjorie Mawby, both 95, tied the knot on March 29, 1941, at The Methodist Church in Desborough.

And now, 75 years on, they are still as happy as ever.

Fred, originally from Kettering, said: “One of my friends knew Marjorie’s sister so we went on a double date.

“We went on a walk along Stoke Road in Desborough, I can remember it.

“We’ve always lived well and kept clean and I like to entertain people as I played in a band.

“I put my secret down to a drop of rum and Weetabix biscuits each day.”

The couple had five children – Marlene, Susan, Anne, Angela and Mandy.

Fred worked in a foundry making machine tools but was called away during the Second World War and served in Greece as a tank transporter.

Marjorie worked in a shoe factory in Desborough while bringing up her family.

She said: “We’ve all had our ups and downs but the main thing is we’re still together.”

The pair celebrated their anniversary at their home in Desborough with family and neighbours.

Taking pride of place on their mantlepiece are cards from the Queen and David Cameron, along with a signed photo of Vera Lynn, who they met in Greece.
