The works, which are due to begin on Monday, 3 September, include upgrading the surface in front of the Abbey and along the south lawn, which has experienced issues during wet weather.

The upgrade of the surface are aimed at protecting it from busy footfall and winter weather.

Hinton Groundworks will be undertaking the improvement works at Delapré, which are expected to be completed before Christmas 2018. Delapré Abbey and the Orangery Café will remain open, with a range of events and activities available to the public throughout the autumn and winter.

Cabinet member for regeneration, enterprise and planning, Councillor Tim Hadland, said: “Since opening in March, Delapré Abbey has experienced an extremely successful first six months.

“The visitor numbers have exceeded forecast, it is a popular wedding venue and the café is often bustling with people enjoying a break from a walk around the Abbey or grounds.

“We feel now is a good time to take stock of what improvements are needed and this includes upgrading the surface in front of the main entrance and along the south lawn.

“The new surface will be more durable and will drain more easily, which is something we are keen to install following the high footfall, and the very wet weather we experienced at the end of May.”
