A woman from Northampton is hoping to complete the rare feat of finishing a marathon in each of the world’s seven continents.

Karen Pinckard, aged 54, only started running 15 years ago but fell in love with it so much that two years later she signed up to run the Great wall of China marathon.

In the past 16 months, Mrs Pinckard has completed marathons in Auckland, Antarctica, the Inca trail at Machu Picchu, Big Sur in California and in two weeks will try to complete the set of seven continents by running the Tokyo marathon on Sunday, February 23 and the Cape Town marathon in April.

Mrs Pinckard, a former pupil of Weston Favell Upper School, said: “One day I woke up and had to run. I didn’t own any workout clothes but that didn’t stop me. I put on some sweats and a T-shirt and ran along Ocean beach in San Francisco for 25 minutes.

“I felt so exhilarated I started running marathons the following year.

“I love the whole idea of combining travel with running.

“There are only about 100 women in the world to finish all seven Continents and I’m pretty sure I am the first woman to do this from Northampton.

“I have only found one other woman from England to run all seven continents.”

Mrs Pinckard is part of the Seven Continents Marathon Club and after completing seven marathons in seven continents she hopes to then run seven half-marathons in seven continents.
