Northampton market traders could be charged to have their rubbish collected, borough council budget reveals

The move will save taxpayers at least £10,000 per year, contributing a total of £50,000 toward the £11.2 million savings the council must make in the next five years.

Market traders currently benefit from free collections as part of a package of support which also includes heavily discounted parking and a 25 per cent rent reduction, which has not changed since 2013.

Taxpayers also cover the cost for the market’s electricity and water and traders are not required to contribute toward their business rates which is charged at £70,000 for the whole square.

Councillor Phil Larratt, council deputy leader, said: “Budgets are under constant pressure and everyone needs to contribute, though we will continue offering a huge amount of support to the market traders, especially by again freezing rents that have already been frozen for five years.

“We know those who this affects will be unhappy about the introduction of charges and they will have the option to make their own arrangements for refuse disposal instead.

“I don’t believe we can expect householders to pay more for services and increased charges without other users of council services also paying more.”

Councillor Danielle Stone (Lab, Castle) said: “This is another kick in the teeth for market traders for are already getting a deal from this council.

"Market traders are trying to make a living and get the market thriving again but this is yet another setback for them.

"I fear some market traders may now throw in the towel as this is another deliberate blow delivered by the borough council. It’s awful.”
