A man has appeared in front of magistrates in Northampton charged with maliciously wounding a 61-year-old man in Abington Square early on Sunday morning.

Daniel Tero, 22, of Burleigh Road, Kingsthorpe, spoke only to confirm his name and address before entering no plea at a court hearing this afternoon.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Northampton Crown Court for a preliminary hearing at 10am on Wednesday, September 3.

The charges relate to an alleged assault reported to have taken place at 3.55am on Sunday outside Steffans jewellers in Abington Square.

The court was told that George Wedderburn, 61, was punched once in the face during the incident while allegedly trying to intervene in a fight between the defendant and two other men.

Mr Wedderburn currently remains in a critical condition at Northampton General Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for a bleed on the brain.

Forensic officers were on the scene at Abington Square this morning and a spokesperson for Steffans jewellers confirmed the business had handed over CCTV footage to police to help with the investigation.
