Members of Northampton’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) People’s Forum will be launching a national campaign to encourage people to take a stand against homophobia

The LGBTQ Forum, run by Northampton Borough Council, will be hosting a stand at Northampton’s Umbrella Fair, today and over this weekend at The Racecourse in Northampton, to promote Straight Allies, a campaign which aims to recruit heterosexual people who believe in equality.

Co-chairman of the forum, Councillor Anna King (Con, Phippsville), said: “We have had 200 pin badges made up to give away to people who sign up and we will be giving everyone a chance to write their own messages and thoughts on pieces of paper, which we will then make into a bunting to use at our other events.

“This year we will have our own stage at the fair and have a line-up of local musicians and poetry readings throughout the weekend.

“During the weekend we will be taking video clips of interviews which will then be turned into an online film which we will screen, alongside other attractions, at International Coming Out Day on October 11, at the Derngate theatre.

“Homophobia and issues like that are, luckily, not a big problem in Northampton and there is a diverse mix of people, but there are always problems somewhere and it’s important that people know there is support available. More information about this, and forum meeting dates, can be found on our page on the borough council website.”

The Umbrella Fair is at the Racecourse today and tomorrow and offers two days of entertainment, including music, theatre and dance performances.

There will also be stalls selling arts and crafts, environmental and horticultural experts handing out advice and tips, alternative therapists providing demonstrations and tasters and lots of fun and games for children and young people.
