Northampton girl will finally get her life-changing £27,000 operation thanks to readers

Brave Kelis Broomes, 5, of Marina Gardens, lost two thirds of her blood count when she was born back in 2013, which meant her body struggled to cope with the lack of blood cells.

As a result, she could not efficiently carry oxygen around her body, leaving her with organ failure and quadriplegia cerebral palsy.

When Kelis was born back in 2013 she had two blood transfusions and was moved to Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough for end-of-life care after medics thought she would not survive when her life support machine was switched off.

Kelis soon defied all odds and went from strength to strength after five days at the hospice and was taken home to live with her family.

Since January her family have been fundraising for Kelis to have a life changing operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy, which will give her the best chance to walk independently.

Helen Broomes, Kelis' mum was on a mission to raise £27,000 by September 19 to fund Kelis' pre-booked operation - with any additional money raised to pay for private therapy that is not available on the NHS.

This week Helen revealed how her family can breathe a sigh of relief and Kelis can now count down the days until she goes to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) to undergo her operation.

Helen said: "Thanks to many events being held, challenges being done and just the kindness of strangers, friends, family we've now raised £32,000.

"This fantastic amount means Kelis can now have her surgery on 19 September at GOSH, plus intensive therapy courses pre and post op.

"I'd like to do a big thank you to everyone that has supported Kelis on her quest to walk and to let everyone know that Kelis is now able to have an operation that without everyone's support wouldn't be possible.

"Kelis is such a determined little girl that catches the heart of everyone she meets."
