The director of a new musical by Northampton Gilbert & Sullivan group has been revealed.
The group will be performing Yeoman of the Guard next year under the direction of Leon Berger.
As a singer Leon has taken major roles with the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera and New Sadler’s Wells and has sung over 100 operatic roles in England, Europe and the West Indies.
Leon has performed the lyric and patter baritone roles in all 14 operas by Gilbert & Sullivan with such companies as G&S For All, The Magic of D’Oyly Carte, Gawsworth Summer Opera, Grim’s Dyke Company and at the International G&S Festival at Buxton.
A spokesperson for the group said; “Yeomen is my favourite of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and to have the chance to stage this lesser performed show, in the Royal and with a new director is tremendously exciting.
“Leon promises to bring a new vision and staging for this popular operetta and the whole group is excited to see his vision come into reality. If you enjoy singing and performing and are free in March next year, this is an opportunity not to be missed; join us on stage and take part rather than just watch it.
“Leon brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience and we are all excited by his appointment and vision for Yeomen.
“Whilst we will continue to offer a traditional approach to Gilbert & Sullivan, Leon’s vision for the production is new and exciting, he promises it will be a traditional Yeomen with a ‘twist’.
“It is generally acknowledge Yeomen of the Guard has the finest music of all of the Gilbert & Sullivan canon and is one of the ‘best sings’ outside traditional opera,” the spokesperson said.
“It should not be missed by anyone passionate about music and singing.
“We are currently looking for talented singer/actors to join us for Yeomen of the Guard and we particularly need Tenors, Baritones and Basses, although we would be delighted to welcome Sopranos and Altos as well,” the spokesperson added.
General group auditions will take place from 7.30pm on Monday April 20, 2015, at the rehearsal rooms in Boothville Community Hall.
