Northampton drivers warned about severe delays on the M1 south of the county following crash between a lorry and car

A lorry and a car have been involved in a serious accident on the M1 south of Northamptonshire.

The M1 was closed both north and southbound between junction 12 and 13 in Bedfordshire following a serious accident involving a lorry and a car at around 12.30pm today.

Businessman Robert Hughes from Northampton has been trapped on the northbound carriageway trying to get home for the last two and a half hours.

Mr Hughes said: “Both sides of the motorway are closed. There’s fire engines, ambulances and police cars all at the scene.

“I’m heading towards Northampton on my way back from deliveries. I’m one mile away from junction 13.

“I’ve not moved in over two and a half hours.”

Motorists travelling from Northampton will need to divert away from the M1 using the emgergency diversions which have been put in place.

One lane has been reopened by police for people who have become trapped on the motorway.
