A hairdresser is facing the closure of her Northampton salon after sewage leaked through her ceiling, months after a £31,000 refurbishment.
Emma Boddington, 27, from Wootton Fields, launched Rockabelle’s in a basement premises in Dychurch Lane in March, on a 10-year lease, combining a high-spec hair salon with two nail bars in a boutique-style reception area.
But she was horrified this week to arrive at work and find fluid from sewage pipes raining through the roof from a neighbouring William Hill bookmakers onto furniture and equipment.
Although she has now cleaned up the premises to an extent, the reception and nail bar area has sustained at least £3,000 of damage.
Emma said: “When I came downstairs, I just said ‘Oh my God!’. The smell of urine was horrendous and I was just shocked. It was absolutely awful.”
Emma came to work before 9am and the leak was not stemmed until about 1pm. However she believes the roof had been gushing all night.
A Chesterfield chair, other boutique-style furniture, two chandeliers, both nail bars and two £500 nail drills were all wrecked.
Emma is now waiting for insurance experts to assess when they can reopen, both for reasons of hygiene and, because the light fittings were saturated, safety. However, with no money coming in and their savings accounts empty after the recent upgrade, Emma’s partner, Ben Holloway, said they may have to give up the business.
He said: “I can’t see where money for our bills will come from. We’re losing clients every day we’re closed and we’ll get no insurance money upfront.”
Mr Holloway said he believed the leak was caused by a customer stuffing toilet roll into the urinals at the bookmakers in nearby Fish Street.
A spokesman for William Hill told the Chronicle & Echo: “Unfortunately, the bathroom within our Northampton appears to have leaked
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to the owner of the premises affected by the leakage and we are working with our insurance company to resolve the issue,” the spokesman added.
