New pub boss promises '˜proper drinks', a good chat and a game of chess at new Northampton venue

St Giles Ale House is set to open next month, offering a rotating range of ales and ciders - as well as a quiet place to chat.

Work to the St Giles Ale House in St Giles Street is nearing completion, which will see the long-closed property brought back into use.

The new venue is the brainchild of three long-serving publicans from Northampton, Adam Case Terry Steers Ian Tomkins, who have a pedigree of experience working in and opening local nightspots.

The premise of St Giles Ale House is to feature a rotating stock of six real ales and six traditional ciders, replaced once the barrel is finished, with a singular lager and wine selection.

“The idea is every time you come in, you’ll have a new option to try,” said Mr Case, 26, who helped set up the Retro Bar in Bridge Street.

The pub is to feature a small beer garden to the rear and the owners plan to expand into a basement there by the start if next year.

An exact date for the opening has yet to be decided, but the team are hoping to be ready early in November.

“The idea that we are going with is to take pubs back 60 or so years,” added Mr Case.

“So there will be no televisions, no live sports or radios.

“We want people to come in enjoy a proper drink, sit down and have a chat - maybe have a game of chess.

“We want to bring back that old concept of talking to someone new.”
