New free car park to open in Northamptonshire town

A new free long stay car park in Towcester is planned to open next week.

As part of South Northamptonshire Council’s (SNC) plans to deliver more parking in the town, the new Tove Long Stay Car Park off Northampton Road, is nearing completion and is set to be open to the public on Monday, April 11.

The car park will be free to use and will include 60 spaces with no restrictions, except for no overnight parking.

A further 110 spaces will also be available once improvements to the A5 junction at Northampton Road/Brackley Road have been completed.

Councillor Stephen Clarke, portfolio holder for economic development and regeneration, said: “It was always our intention as part of the development of Towcester to provide much-needed additional car parking to support the growth of the town, and I am confident the opening of the Tove Long Stay Car Park will bring many benefits to those living and working in the area.”

Following advice from the Environment Agency, SNC has implemented a flood action plan to mitigate the effects of any flooding at the new car park.

This will involve officers closely monitoring the site when a flood warning has been received and closing it if considered necessary. Any vehicles remaining in the car park may be removed to prevent flood damage.

Once the new Tove Long Stay Car Park is operational, the existing car park by the Freemasons Hall will become the Tove Short Stay Car Park. The council has acted on residents’ feedback and will enforce a three-hour limit from 8am to 6pm with no return within three hours, from Monday to Friday. These restrictions will also apply to the on-street parking on Northampton Road.

The temporary car park adjacent to The Forum on Moat Lane will also close to enable work on the next phase of the Moat Lane Regeneration.

Bays next to The Forum have also been converted to shared Parent and Toddler and Blue Badge Disabled parking. Parking is permitted for any vehicle displaying a valid blue badge or vehicles fitted with an infant child seat. Daily monitoring will take place to maintain compliance.
