Furniture studies students from Moulton College came second and fourth in the national finals of the SkillBuild Cabinet Making competition held at The Skills Show.

James Boyes, who came second despite being the youngest entrant, has now gained a place in the national cabinet making squad and is in with a chance to represent Britain at the 2019 WorldSkills competition in Russia.

Medal-winner James and fellow student Samuel Matthews, whose work was highly commended, spent three days at the NEC in Birmingham in November constructing mounted cabinets from 3D technical drawings while 73,000 visitors passed and watched.

Moulton lecturer Guy Kilsby said: “The work was precise and detailed, with 2mm tolerances, various joints and shaped legs for the cabinets. The boys were operating under enormous pressure and scrutiny. They’ve done themselves proud.”
