A motorist was arrested by police in Northampton after he was spotted drinking from a bottle of whiskey while driving along the M1.

Officers were called to the motorway at about 2pm after reports of a red Lexus swerving across lanes of the southbound M1 near junction 17, where the carriageway has been narrowed for ongoing roadworks.

An alarmed member of the public then called the police control room to report the Lexus driver was drinking from a bottle of whiskey.

Refusing to stop at first, the driver was clocked by highways officers doing 55mph.

He eventually stopped of his own accord past junction 15 where he blew 76mg per 100ml of breath at the roadside. That is more than double the legal limit of 35mg.
