The Northamptonshire County Council scheme is aimed at improving traffic safety on the town’s ring-road, it claims, as well as improving access to the police headquarters at Wootton Hall site - which is likely to be converted into a free school in the near future.

The next full road closure on Mereway will take place between 8pm on Friday, March 4 and 6am on Saturday, March 5.

A county council spokesman said: “The closure is needed as the project enters a new phase and work swaps to a different section of the highway.”

Throughout the works until April there will be off-peak lane closures between Mondays and Fridays (between 9.30am and 3.30pm).

These will be introduced “depending on requirements,” with a 20mph speed limit in place during these times.

In April full road closures will be required for the final road surfacing and reinstating of road markings over various weekends, with the exact dates still to be determined.

The roundabout is due to be completed by May.
