Mindless thieves have caused £5,000 worth of damage at a Northampton business in a wrecking spree in the early hours of this morning, making off with just £200.

The vandals targeted A Most Marvellous Place To Shop, in Kettering Road, Northampton - a business run by more than 100 independent traders dealing in items such as antiques, crafts, furniture, vinyl and clothing.

The yobs dismantled the CCTV system, smashed up tills and a computer server, and attempted to flood the building by stuffing towels in sinks and leaving the taps running.

They also stole the safe and a collection box for the Crazy Hats breast cancer charity, a theft described by owner Gill Burgess as “despicable”.

She said: “That is just the most despicable thing, that they would stoop that low. They are lowlives.

“They took the safe, which was bolted into a cabinet, but there was very little in there.

“They obviously knew exactly what they were doing because they took the cameras out systematically. They knew what they were looking for.

“The till system is the most valuable thing to us and they have just smashed it up. And they took all the keys to the cabinets.

“There are more than 100 tiny little traders here who are just trying to earn a shilling for their families, and this is what happens.

“Our customers have just been so lovely to us today. They are lovely people.”

The incident took place sometime between 2.30am and 6.40am today.

Witnesses, or anyone with any information about the incident, is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
