Medieval menu on offer during festival in Wellingborough this weekend
A feast fit for a king has been planned as part of celebrations for the fourth Wellingborough Medieval Festival.
To mark the event, one of the town’s pubs has launched a special medieval banquet for visitors.
The menu at Ye Golden Lion in Sheep Street forms part of a day of entertainment and family activities which will take place on Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19.
Dance troupe Passamezzo are set to perform and medieval characters Juan the Jester and Minstrel Tom will be mingling with visitors.
Children’s entertainer Lullaby Leesa and her puppets will also be there, alongside the Dancing Bear, medieval cooking expert Sarah Stockdale and top professional falconer Gary Baxter of Backwoods Falconry.
The festival is being supported by the Northamptonshire Community Foundation’s Compton Fund and has been organised by the Wellingborough Business Improvement District (BID).
The BID is paid for by businesses and works to promote the town centre through the Discover Wellingborough campaign.
BID manager John Cable said: “It’s really great that local businesses are getting behind the medieval theme as it gives a real community spirit to the whole event as well as helping to bring it to life for visitors.
“What better way to celebrate all the fantastic activities and events we have planned in the day, then eating a traditional medieval banquet at the Golden Lion in the evening?
“Last year the weekend attracted 9,000 visitors and we are certain that this year will see even more people joining in with all the fun.”
There are activities for all the family starting from 10am on Saturday through to 4pm on Sunday across various locations including Croyland Gardens, the Tithe Barn Lawns, All Hallows Church and the churchyard.
Medieval market stalls will be set up for visitors to browse and dance classes will take place across the weekend.
The pub has launched two special menus which would have been traditionally eaten by rich and poor people during the medieval era.
The poorer menu includes game terrine, fish stew and jugged hare and the richer menu has pigeon breast, venison and English herb salmon.
The cost is £30 per person and everyone will get to sample all the dishes which are available on the night.
There will be live music and dressing up in costume is optional.
The evening festivities start from 7pm.
