Northampton Crown Court heard today how, on March 19 last year, Riza Guzelyurt, 30, subjected his victim to a planned and extremely violent assault at her home just as she was about to take her two children to school.

Previously, the defendant had carried out a series of acts of intimidation against his 43-year-old victim, who had reported him to police for harassment.

The court was told she received 11 wounds to her neck, chest, legs and arms and sustained life-threatening injuries.

She was treated by neighbours before being airlifted to hospital in Coventry.

Police found the suspect in Jubilee Park in the town the same day.

The jury watched the frenzied assault take place on CCTV cameras installed at the victim’s home and heard from neighbours, who were praised by Judge Rupert Mayo for their bravery while giving evidence.

John Straw, prosecuting, said the impact of the assault had had a significant effect on the victim, with her requiring hospital treatment for the rest of her life in addition to the emotional distress caused to her and her children.

Judge Mayo sentenced Guzelyurt to life in prison and also imposed a restraining order until further notice, forbidding him to contact the victim, her two children and her former husband.

Speaking after sentencing, Det Sgt Andrew Barnes of Northamptonshire Police said: “This act of domestic violence was carried out by an extremely dangerous individual.

“Guzelyurt has shown no remorse and taken no responsibility for his actions throughout the trial and I welcome the sentence given by Judge Mayo.

“While today’s sentence cannot undo the effect this crime has had on the victim and her family, I hope she is now able to start to re-build her life.”
