Man spends two days in hospital after horror dog attack in Rushden

Peter Coman was walking his four dogs in a wooded area known as The Spinney, just behind Blackfriars, at about 3pm on Tuesday, June 7.

One of the dogs was attacked by a large brown dog with no collar, so Mr Coman laid on it to try to protect it.

But he was then bitten by the attacker, leaving him “bleeding like a pig”.

He said: “We were walking along the wood and out of nowhere the dog came bounding up and started biting my dog.

“I tried to get it off but it wouldn’t so I laid on it to protect it.

“The dog’s owner just stood there and screamed and waved her arms around.

“I looked down and there was blood everywhere, I was bleeding like a pig.

“I had to spend two days in hospital with some serious lacerations to my arms and puncture wounds.”

The incident also left one of Mr Coman’s dogs requiring head stitches.

Mr Coman says the owner of the dog did not come over and has also been critical of the way the incident has been handled by Northamptonshire Police.

He added: “The woman did not come back so I called the police and ambulance.

“My main concern is children. If it could attack me then a child wouldn’t stand a chance.

“I was in hospital for two days and I know who did it but the police will not do anything about it.

“They are sending someone out to see me tomorrow so we’ll see how it goes.”

A police spokesman said: “We were called on June 7 at about 3pm to an incident at Blackfriars in Rushden where a man was attacked by a dog, believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier.

“Officers visited him on June 8 to take a statement and a follow-up statement will be taken tomorrow.

“The investigation is ongoing and we urge anyone who may have seen this incident to contact us.”
