Loss of BHS leaves retail '˜vacuum' that needs filling in Northampton according to regeneration chief

Council bosses have written to the owners of the buildings once occupied by BHS in Northampton, in a bid to get the two big retail units 're-occupied' quickly.

The authority’s regeneration director, Steven Boyes, wrote to Threadneedle Investment Services last week, hoping to arrange a meeting with the company.

One of the stores is situated in Abington Street, at the heart of the town centre, and the other is on St James Retail Park.

They closed following the collapse of BHS in April, and the council says it is now keen to see them re-let quickly.

The council’s cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Tim Hadland, said: “We were saddened at the news one of the British high streets’ most recognizable names was going into administration.

“The closure of these two stores leaves somewhat of a vacuum which we are keen to see filled.

“They are both rather large units, and given their positions we hope they will present rather attractive propositions for other retailers.

“We decided to take proactive steps as we’re open to discussion about how the council might be able to help expedite the process.”

At the beginning of September, the council’s cabinet will also consider two options for the nearby Greyfriars site.
