Let's make St James a '˜litter-free zone' says Northampton councillor

Councillor Rufia Ashraf (Lab, St James) has been calling for a stop to litterbugs in her ward since July last year.

But now she is proposing to make the borough council increase the number of bins in the area and step up warden enforcement in a bid to clamp down on littering.

She said: “After speaking to local residents and visitors to the area it was clear they were frustrated with the level of litter on our roads and streets.

“They have asked me to try and do something about it.

“So I am in the process of setting up a campaign to make St James a Litter Free Zone.

“A consultation will be held to determine whether it will be a positive move to help keep the area litter free and also discuss ideas.

“It will come with enforcement and local determination of residents to keep St James clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy.”

Councillor Ashraf will be holding consultations on the matter throughout May.

They will be on Monday, May 9, at the Iceland store in St James between 11am and 1pm; at 11-1pm.

At the Doddridge Centre on the same day between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

Then on Wednesday, May 11, at St James Library from 9.30am to 12pm.

And at St James Primary School, Harlestone Road, between 2.45pm and 3.30pm on Thursday,May 12.
