Evacuation of the 414 properties in the exclusion zone will begin at 8am this morning (Sunday), known as ‘blowdown day’.
The Grosvenor Centre and Mayorhold multi-storey car parks closed at 6pm yesterday (Saturday) and will only re-open as soon as it is safe to do so after the demolition.
Wellington Street, Upper Mounts and Campbell Square car parks will also be closed on Sunday and will re-open later in the day.
Roads closed to traffic on Sunday will be: Sheep Street (partial), Lady’s Lane, Newland, Victoria Street, Greyfriars, Wellington Street, Albert Place, St Giles Terrace (partial) and Abington Street.
The exact time of demolition will be decided by DSM Demolition as they will need to clear the exclusion zone before the ‘blowdown’, although sirens will warn townsfolk when the building is due to come down.
North Gate bus station will remain open on the day, with services stopping only briefly when Greyfriars is actually demolished, and coach services, which would usually stop on Victoria Street, will be redirected to use the Drapery.
