Steffans Jewellers of Abington Square suffered a bad hit over the weekend after shocked pedestrians witnessed a bus mount the kerb, tearing down parts of the shop sign and leaving wires on show.

The accident is believed to have happened at around 7.15pm on Saturday.

Director of Steffans Jewellers Wes Suter said: "I wasn't aware to begin with that a bus had hit the front of the shop - I thought somebody had broken in.

"A year-and-a half ago, I attended an alarm call-out - somebody had driven a car through my other shop in Market Harborough, and I thought it had happened again."

Repair work to fix the front of the store, which is expected to cost thousands of pounds, is now underway.

The bus company has been approached for a comment.
