The number of e-books borrowed from libraries in Northamptonshire by young people has doubled in the past year, latest figures have shown.

The number of children’s e-books being downloaded through Northamptonshire County Council’s online library service has risen from 318 to 785.

Among the most popular e-books with young adults are The Mortal Instruments novels by best-selling author Cassandra Clare, who has three books from the series in the top 10.

All three books from the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins also appear in the list of the most downloaded titles.

Councillor Robin Brown, cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, said: “We’ve worked hard to increase the number and variety of e-books available for children and young people this year and I’m pleased to see that more young people are downloading our e-books as a result.

“Reading plays a huge part in encouraging good health and wellbeing, as well as improving performance and attainment in school.”

Almost 10,000 e-books have been downloaded by adult borrowers within the past year, with Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels taking the top 16 spots in the most popular downloads chart.

People with a full library membership can download books for free through Northamptonshire libraries, while virtual memberships are also available.

Books can be downloaded to PCs, MACs, iPads, smartphones and all e-book readers except Kindle, due to Amazon guidelines.
