The winner of the Chronicle & Echo Pub of the Year competition has been announced. It is the Swan and Helmet .
Landlady at the Irish pub on Grove Road, Northampton, Teresa McCarthy said: “I’m chuffed and delighted, I really am,” when she heard the news.
The pub made it onto a shortlist of 10 pubs nominated by readers of the Chron and the venue brought in the most votes from satisfied customers. Teresa has been landlady of the pub for nine years and over that time has built up a community atmosphere.
She said: “We keep it as a traditional bar with Irish music and Irish sports.
“When people come in they are surprised by the atmosphere and what a nice family friendly bar it is.”
The bar has music on several nights a week with Irish music on a Saturday as well as showing Sky and BT sports and a quiz night on a Thursday.
And Teresa, who also runs her own catering company, is planning to bring back her Sunday roast dinners in January. She paid tribute to her customers who she says are the key to the community atmosphere. She said: “They will be chuffed. We do a lot of charity work here. It’s a community pub, it really is, and everybody gets behind you. It’s them that’s won it.”
Second place went to The Peacock and third place to The Romany.
