How would you improve Northampton town centre?

Groups and businesses are being asked to give their views on the future of Northampton ahead of the Town Centre Summit next week.

The summit, organised by Northampton Borough Council and taking place on September 20, is looking for ideas to improve the town centre.

A recent study by the Chronicle & Echo found that the town centre currently had the highest number of empty shops in the past five years as the town faced the same challenges hitting high streets across the country. Recent improvements have been made to street furniture, as well as announcing plans to allow traffic back into parts of the town centre.

Former independent retailer Stephen Church is to chair the summit and then produce a report that will review of the issues facing Northampton town centre and identify potential future developments.

Mr Church will meet individually with representatives of different groups from the town’s day and night time economy including property landlords, independent and corporate retailers, restaurants and hair salons, Northamptonshire Police and the Northampton town centre BID.

Then in the afternoon, representatives of a wider group of businesses and other organisations from across the town centre have been invited to attend a joint session, when they will have the opportunity to make their views known.

Anyone who has been invited to attend but is unable to, can submit their views in writing by emailing

Members of the public are also welcome to take part by email to the same address before Wednesday September 18.

Mr Church said: “I am looking forward to hearing a wide cross section of views at the Town Centre Summit but there may be people that we have invited who cannot attend, and there may be others who have not been invited but who have ideas they would like us to consider.

“I would like anyone who has not received an invitation to take the time to email, so that I have as much information to take into account as possible when I prepare my report for Northampton Borough Council.”

Cllr David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council, added: “We are working hard with our partners to create the right conditions for businesses to thrive in Northampton but no-one has the monopoly on good ideas and we want as much feedback as possible for Stephen and his review.”
