The event is expected to attract crowds of between 40,000 and 60,000 to the Racecourse over the course of the weekend of July 2 and 3.

In addition to the line-up of live music, entertainment and food stalls, one of the event sponsors, DP Marketing Communications, is calling on hirsute men to jazz up their facial hair with glitter in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The firm wants bearded volunteers to be sponsored to have their “beards, burns and stubbly chins transformed into bright, colourful masterpieces” by a team of “glitter fairies” at the festival itself.

Director of Northamptonshire based DP, Daniella Paolozzi, said: “I love coming up with ideas that will get people talking and with a combination of a love for sparkly stuff, all that is fabulous and also the popularity of glitter beards over the past year, the idea was born.

“I hope the event will help raise awareness and funds to help find a treatment that will slow the process down or even better, a cure entirely, so nobody else has to have their identities taken away from them again by this cruel illness.”

The fundraising effort, being called the Glitter Beard Fundraizstravaganza, will also allow people to glitter their beards at home and upload them to the event’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/events/141109142941016.

The event organisers are also attempting to set a new record for “the most amount of glitter beards created in three hours.” The official Guinness application is pending.
