In a Facebook post published on the #BacZac page, dad Jason, mum Helen and sister Beth said they had been overwhelmed with all the “wonderful messages, posts, texts” about Zac.

It states: “Zac was such a lover of life and it’s lovely to see those images of him enjoying life to the full as he did.

“We have spoken to the consultants looking after him today as we had so many questions. We can let you know now that they said: ‘Zac fought and fought and kept fighting with so much energy and courage right until the end.’

“He had the wrong body, a body that had too many illnesses to overcome and in the end the cancers and the combination of all the harsh chemotherapy that he was having was a battle that was impossible to win.”

Zac’s family said the operation to address his chest tumour had to be postponed and then he became too ill to have his stem cell transplant to treat the leukaemia.

The family said they wanted to thank all the staff who treated Zac and would announce details about the funeral and where a book of condolence will be in the next few days.
