Greyfriars proposals to be submitted to Northampton Borough Council in '˜a couple of weeks'

The 1970s-built Greyfriars bus station was knocked down in March 2015 in a spectacular demolition watched by thousands online.

In April the council confirmed it had shortlisted two plans for mixed use developments on the four-acre site, but needed more time to work with the developers.

It had hoped they would go on show in “early 2016”.

Speaking at last night’s full council meeting at the Guildhall, Labour’s opposition leader Councillor Danielle Stone said: “I am conscious there has been a huge slippage in timescale, we are waiting to see the plans and be consulted on them.

“Can you give us some idea of the timescale?”

Councillor Mary Markham (Con, Park) responded saying she would be meeting with the shortlisted developers over the next “couple of weeks”.

She said; “It’s not about time it’s about legacy.

“I don’t want it to be something that is not right for the town.

“Within the next couple of weeks we will have plans coming to us. There will be a consultation before it goes to the planning committee.”

Councillor Markham confirmed a coach station would feature in the plans, which would be used by National Express services.
