Grass and flowers at Northamptonshire cemetery left '˜muddy mess' by council weedkiller

A council-contracted company used so much weedkiller at a Northamptonshire cemetery that it left graves 'muddy and a mess'.

Family members said they were upset after visiting the graves of relatives at Doddington Road Cemetery in Wellingborough and seeing large areas of bare earth where turf had been and dead flowers.

Kirsty Constable, who visits her grandad and sister’s plots, said her family felt devastated at the lack of respect shown.

And she said it was the second year in a row the grass had been accidentally killed off.

She said: “It was lots of graves all around the cemetery, including the children’s ones. It just looked awful, just mud.

“when we saw some of the areas on the way in, I went ahead to check my grandads and Emma’s and I had to tell my mum they’d done it again.

“She was trying hard not to cry.

“We haven’t got the chance to give them something anymore. The only thing we can do for them is keep their graves nice.”

Mrs Constable said she and her family have been so unhappy with the maintenance of the graves in the past, that they have laid their own turf and kept it decent with their own lawnmower.

A spokeswoman for Wellingborough council said they contract Norse to carry out work at the cemetery.

However, Norse had “not yet been able to investigate”.

The spokeswoman said: “We are currently in the process of investigating this matter.”
