Certain GP surgeries in Northampton will take turns to open into the evening to create more same-day appointments.

The plans by NHS Nene are likely to be greeted warmly by people who work traditional office hours and either don’t want to take time off work, or find it impossible to see their GP at short notice.

NHS bosses say the measure will “alleviate on-the-day demand.”

A spokesman for NHS Nene said: “It will see the creation of an overspill clinic hosted by a GP at one of a number of rotating surgeries.”

The service will be based in central Northampton and run from 3pm to 7pm.

Meanwhile, the latest board papers of NHS Nene also reveal that bosses had additionally considered making all GP practices open on certain a days until 7pm.

But the Governing Body decided the proposal “would not be met favourably” at the moment, and would consider implementing it next year instead.
