A Star Wars-themed mural on a derelict Northampton pub has been turning heads on a busy junction this week.
The White Horse in Kingsthorpe closed in 2009 and has since been seen as a hotspot for vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
But the latest piece of graffiti to adorn the former pub, owned by Enterprise Inns, has created quite a stir.
The expansive mural features characters from the Star Wars movie - but in a pub environment.
A banner has also appeared above the doorway stating “May the horse be with you,” a pun on the famous Star Wars saying.
In the mural Darth Vader can be seen as a nightclub bouncer in the doorway, C3PO is looking a little worse for wear, stormtroopers are playing darts, and the Mos Eisley cantina band are playing in the front window.
At least two of the panels could be seen as offensive, in particular a group of jawas smoking an illegal substance round a table and C3PO making an offensive hand gesture.
But many passers-by have appreciated the tongue in cheek nature of the as-yet-unknown artist.
Engineer Tim Hart, of Wallbeck Close, Kingsthorpe, 52, said: “it actually appears very high quality.
“I may not know a lot about graffiti, but this has really improved the environment - it’s a bit of fun.”
Two years ago advertisers had another idea to brighten up the abandoned White Horse pub - by placing a 16ft LED screen on the building.
It was turned down by planning board members who felt it would distract drivers on the busy junction and make the area look like “Picadilly Circus.”
