Children and young people across Northampton can join in this year’s National Playday event taking place at Abington Park next month.

The event has been organised by Northampton Leisure Trust (NLT) and will take place on on Wednesday, August 5, between noon and 4pm. The event has been organised with the aim of encouraging free play and enjoying the great outdoors, with children and their families encouraged to be physically active and maintain healthy lifestyles.

National Play Day is free of charge and will include activities for under fives, a climbing wall, arts and crafts, a reptile display, sporting activity, magic displays and workshops, as well as freely chosen activities by the children who attend. In addition parents and children will also have an opportunity to give their views on children’s play facilities and opportunities across Northampton.

Chris Serbyn, play and health development officer at Northampton Leisure Trust, said: “The latest Child Health Profile published in June 2015 by Public Health England indicated that 8.7 per cent of children aged 4-5 and 16.8 per cent of 10-11 year olds living in Northamptonshire are classified as obese. National Play Day provides a great day out for children and their families to take part in a wide range of activities keeping them active and entertained.”

To celebrate outdoor play over the summer months Northampton Leisure Trust will be using the hashtag #playdayselfie across social media and they want everyone to get involved. From the back garden to playing out in the street or attending organised events such as Play Rangers or National Playday, NLT want to see your #playdayselfie. Simply upload your photo to Twitter using the hashtag #playdayselfie to share playful family moments with one another across the town.
