A four-year-old girl was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a Volvo she was travelling in was involved in a collision with a lorry on the M1 in Northamptonshire.

The M1 northbound between junction 15 and 15a was closed on Friday following the crash that happened shortly before 5pm.

A police spokesman said there was heavy traffic at the time and, for reasons yet unknown, a white Mann lorry, driven by a 22-year-old man from Lithuania, was in collision with a blue Volvo XC90, driven by a 37-year-old man from Peterborough.

Several other vehicles were also hit as a result of the collision.

A four-year-old girl, who was a passenger in the Volvo, was taken by air ambulance to John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, with serious injuries.
