Volunteers at the Spencer Bridge Foodbank will be collecting donations at a supermarket in Northampton this week.

From 9am on Thursday, shoppers will be able to donate food items at the Tesco Extra at the Tesco Mereway site, until 5pm on Saturday.

The Spencer Bridge Foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust’s wider UK network, which can provide three days’ emergency food to men, women and children who are struggling financially.

With 90 per cent of the donations being made by members of the public, the foodbank is hoping that people will “give generously”.

Spencer Bridge Foodbank Manager, Roger Machakaire, said: “The current economic climate means more and more people are struggling to put food on the table and we really need local people to give what they can.”

“Rising prices, static incomes and high unemployment are having a real impact on people on the breadline and we’re seeing more people turning to the foodbank for help. We want to make sure that no-one in Northampton is forced to go hungry but to do this we’re urgently asking for help.”

The collection comes after it was revealed earlier this month that demand for food donations has increased by 54 per cent in the last year.
