FLOODING UPDATE: High waters still affecting travel in Northamptonshire

Flood warnings are still in place across the county today and 300 caravans have been evacuated from Billing Aquadrome.

Stoke Goldington Road is still closed because of high waters as well as Beech Lane in Kislingbury.

Drivers are advised to avoid Station Road between the A45 and Grendon as deep water is flowing across the roads.

However the flood waters have receded on the High Street in Yelvertoft, which yesterday saw children at the village primary school carried to safety by boat.

Pub landlord Rob Noakes looked after a group of around eight people at the Knightley Arms in the village last night, whose homes had been flood damaged.

“The flood waters were about 50 yards away from the front door here,” he said. It is a good job we weren’t flooded as they would have had nowhere to go.

“It was a hectic day but the emergency services did a great job.”

The A14 is now fully open, despite extensive closures overnight.

A police spokeswoman said the situation is “constantly changing” so there may be flooded roads that do not appear on travel incident websites.

She said: “There are a number of roads sill affected, so please do not attempt to drive through flood waters.”

Tiffield Church of England Primary School is also open again after the High Street was blocked yesterday.

Head teacher Eliza Hollis, said: “Yesterday the entrance to the village was totally flooded.

“Although the school is higher up, parents couldn’t even get down the road.

“I am the head teacher for four village schools and nearly all of them had problems with the floods yesterday.”

Northamptonshire County Council is reporting no further school closures today.

London Midland has reported that trains on the West Coast Mainline through Northampton are running as normal. Yesterday there were long delays as flood water covered the line, with commuters forced to take replacement buses.

However forecasters predict the weather will stay dry across the county today and tomorrow.

A spokesman from Pitsford Weather Station said: “On the whole, we are looking at an essentially dry day across the county today. We are having to contend with a slow moving occlusion and this will keep it rather cloudy, the cloud becoming thick enough this evening to trigger one or two isolated light showers.”
