Five taxis have been taken off the road in Northampton after Northamptonshire Police and the borough council carried out routine safety checks.

The operation, which was carried out on Friday, involved special constables, council officers and representatives for the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) stopping almost 40 hackney carriages and private hire cars.

Special Inspector Anthony Rawson said five taxis were immediately stopped from driving away and just over half the vehicles had defects in including tyre offences, worn brakes and defective exhausts.

He said: “Working with partner agencies we want to ensure that the vehicles we rely on after a night out are safe to rely on and carry passengers.”
