The family of Northampton murder victim David Brickwood are “completely devastated” by his death, the detective leading the hunt to find his killer has said.
Speaking at the outside the murder scene in Lindsay Avenue, Abington, on Sunday, Inspector Mick Graham of the Major Crime Unit, said the 74-year-old’s family were determined to find who was responsible for his death.
Throughout the day forensic officers in full white suits could be seen working inside the semi-detached house with uniformed officers standing guard outside.
The front door appeared to have been badly damaged with glass missing and just the outside white frame remaining.
A large wooden board had been placed in front one of the downstairs windows, which also looked to have been smashed.
More than 50 bouquets of flowers, several candles and an England shirt have been left against a wall outside the house along with messages of condolence for the family.
Speaking to ITV Anglia, Mr Graham said: “The Brickwood family are totally devastated. David was a pillar of the community, very well liked, very well respected and they are all completely devastated by what has happened.
“But they are helping police as much as they can and are very confident, as am I, that we will find the person responsible.”
