Northampton’s Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Robinson MBE and Paralympic triathlete Joe Townsend joined the celebrations at the town centre venue last week.

The gym opened the doors to the public in January with all existing gym equipment replaced with new state of the art Matrix Equipment, similar to Lodge Park Sports Centre with even a few added extras.

The area has also received a complete makeover, including improving the free weights floor, laying and re-sealing the flooring under the resistance machines, as well as being fully redecorated to give an all round fresh look ready for a new year.

Ellie said: “I train at this facility every Thursday morning, it’s a great place and nice being able to train and do a lot of competitions here.

“Having such a nice facility with a great gym and pool makes people want to go here and encourages fitness and participation in sport, which is what we want.”

Welcoming guests to the official opening, Corby Council’s lead member for community Cllr John McGhee said: “This development will give our members, old and new, the chance to optimise their workouts and enjoy getting fit and active in a way that suits them.

“With continued improvements, we are making our fitness facilities both here and Lodge Park Sports Centre a place where people are excited to visit.

“Just this January we have seen about 950 people per day visiting our health and fitness services across both facilities.

“Attendance in the same month has increased by 4,296 visits compared to last year and our new membership targets for January and February were exceeded, bringing in 674 sales across both months.

“It is clear from these figures that these improvements are what our residents and members want and we look forward to seeing this trend continue.”

The council says feedback from users of the new gym has been extremely positive with comments such ‘loving the new responsive touch screen machines!’ and ‘Fantastic, I am going to love training here’.

Mayor of Corby Julie Riley said: “Corby East Midlands International Pool is a state of the art venue and improvements to the equipment are vital in order to keep it a facility that not just Corby but the whole of the county can be proud of.

“Through the leisure sites in our borough it is fantastic to see first class health & fitness services being delivered and an importance being made on people’s health and wellbeing.

“I think it is clear today that facilities such as this are more than just a gym for people to work out at but are also a lifeline for some towards improving their physical and mental wellbeing.

“This is another great investment for the people of Corby.”
