Date set for public unveiling of proposals for former Greyfriars bus station site

The Greyfriars building was demolished in March 2015 and, following a clean-up, the four-acre site has remained empty ever since.

Proposals were originally due to go on display in April, but the exhibition was postponed as Northampton Borough Council needed more time to work with developers.

Now the borough council has named the date when people can view the developers’ efforts.

A spokeswoman said: “We are working with the two potential developers of the Greyfriars site, who are currently shaping their proposals.

“We intend to put both sets of proposals on display to the public for three days from July 18, before both proposals are discussed at a cabinet meeting in September.”

Originally, three different developers were set to compete for the contract to fill the site, but it was narrowed down to just two early this year.

Councillor Tim Hadland has said in the past that part of the site - which is opposite the National Express stops - could include some sort of transport interchange.

Back in August 2014, more than 100 people responded to a consultation on the Greyfriars land. Some of the suggestions put forward were to turn the land into a retail outlet, an independent shopping village, a large ball pit and even a new bus station.
