A 29-year-old man who admitted squatting in a residential property in Northampton town centre has been fined £300.

Daniel Szewczyk was arrested on October 22 after officers were called out to reports of a burglary.

Northampton Magistrates’ Court heard Szewczyk was seen walking out of the building with a drill.

In police interview, he admitted that he had slept in the property after being shown where he could stay by other homeless people.

Szewczyk, representing himself, said he now had new accommodation in Semilong Road, Northampton, and a stable job as a self-employed decorator.

Szewczyk, who pleaded guilty to a charge of knowingly as a trespasser living in a residential property, said he had only stayed “one night.”

He was fined £300, must pay victim surcharge of £30 and £235 costs.
