Considerable damage has been caused to the rear of the building and small change was taken from the float, as no substantial money is ever left on site over night.

Yesterday’s break-in is the latest of many attacks on the animal charity in Northampton, as before lockdown, the RSPCA charity shop in Duston was targeted twice.Although nothing valuable was taken this time, staff are heartbroken as they have had to close again to clear up just two days after reopening.

Katie Perry, RSPCA retail manager for Northamptonshire, said: “We only reopened on Monday (July 6) and our managers were so keen to get open again to make some money to help abused and neglected animals around the county.

“The charity has experienced financial challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic so it’s heartbreaking that someone could do this to us, especially at such a tough time.

“The shop will be closed today (July 9) while we secure the property and tidy up as they have created quite some mess in the unsuccessful attempt to find something valuable.”

The shop backs onto a residential area and is also fitted with four CCTV cameras, so staff are hoping that someone may have seen something or the footage may help find the culprits.

Northamptonshire Police has confirmed that they have been informed about the break-in.

Anyone who saw the incident or has any information should call police on 101.
