Officers from the Paedophile Online Investigation Team have raided properties in the county armed with warrants targeting people involved in viewing indecent images.

Detective Inspector Stuart Hitchon warned: "Some people believe that by looking images online and behind closed doors they are not causing any harm and it isn't that bad.

"But clearly that is not the case. Behind those images is a child and that child has probably been abused. So they are committing offences, it is illegal and it is really serious.

"Anyone convicted will end up on sex offenders register and it can have a huge impact on families. If they have children, our main concern will be to safeguard those children and it can affect family life for ever.

"We have been targeting people looking at indecent images of children online almost on daily basis over the last couple of months.

"It is not an area we necessarily publicise because of the nature of what it relates to. But the bigger picture for us is safeguarding children and vulnerable."

Officers last week arrested a 50-year-old man from Rushden and a 33-year-old man from Wellingborough on suspicion of possession of indecent images of children during separate raids — part of the Northamptonshire Police 100 Days crackdown on crime in the county. Both men were released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Earlier this month, a 61-year-old Northamptonshire paedophile was jailed for 22 months after admitting a huge collection of more than 175,000 indecent images of children.
