A man who allegedly stole a “processional cross” from All Saints Church in Northampton has appeared in front of magistrates.
Paulis Stanulis, 24, who is currently on remand at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes, faces one count of burglary for the incident in April.
He appeared in the dock of Northampton Magistrates’ Court yesterday wearing a grey jumper, speaking only to confirm his name and to enter no plea to the charge with the aid of an interpreter.
It is alleged the man entered All Saints Church in Northampton town centre late on Thursday, April 23, as a trespasser and took a highly valuable cross used in processions and civic ceremonies from the building.
Prosecuting Mark Williams submitted that, as the cross was a “high value item,” the matter should be dealt with by a Crown Court.
As a result magistrates remanded Stanulis in custody until Wednesday, August 12, when he is due to appear at Northampton Crown Court,
