Man detained after immigration raid on Northamptonshire store

Immigration Enforcement officers visited Loco in Occupation Road, Corby, at about 7pm on Thursday, May 12, following a tip-off.

Staff were questioned to check if they had the right to live and work in the UK, before officers arrested a 29-year-old Indian man for overstaying his visit visa.

He has been detained pending his removal from the UK.

Loco was served a notice warning that a civil penalty of up to £20,000 for employing the illegal worker could be imposed.

The business will be liable to pay this penalty unless it can demonstrate that the correct pre-employment checks were carried out, such as seeing a Home Office document confirming permission to work.

Alison Spowage from the Home Office said: “Our Immigration Enforcement teams are well resourced to tackle illegal working.

“Employers who choose to use illegal labour should expect a visit.

“Illegal working cheats the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and means legitimate job seekers are denied employment opportunities.

“I would urge people to report suspected illegal working to us, as information from members of the public is vital.”
