Former Northampton MP sentenced for speeding for the second time in a year

A former politician who represented a Northampton constituency has once again been sentenced for speeding.

Brian Binley, who was the Member of Parliament for Northampton South from 2005 until 2015, was caught driving at 64mph in a 40mph zone.

The 77-year-old was travelling on the A45 eastbound prior to Claudius Way close to the exit for Tesco in Wellingborough.

When the offence happened on April 27, 2019 there was a temporary local traffic order in place making the speed limit 40mph.

At around 5.50pm, Binley was caught driving in his Jaguar at 64mph. He was also driving on a licence that expired eight days before he was caught speeding.

Binley, of Parker Way, Higham Ferrers, was sentenced at Northampton Magistrates Court yesterday (February 12), in his absence.

The former Conservative MP submitted a doctor’s note to the court that made it clear he was unable to appear before the magistrates.

In his absence, Binley was sentenced to six points on his licence and a £293 fine for the speeding charge.

For the driving otherwise in accordance to a licence offence, he was fined an additional £146. He was not handed any other points as he was capable of having a licence, he just had not applied for one, meaning the offence is non-endorsable.

Binley was also ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £85 towards prosecution costs totalling £554 with the two fines.

This is the third time the former politician has been sentenced in court for speeding.

Binley was banned from driving in June last year after he exceeded the legal amount of points when he was handed three points for driving at 35mph in a 30mph zone back in June 2018.

Previously, Binley had lost his licence in 2007 for once again reaching a total of 12 points on his licence when he was caught driving at 37mph in a 30mph zone in Wellingborough.
