Driver who took part in road rage incident in Wellingborough given suspended jail sentence

Scott Richardson, aged 27, of East Street, Irchester, began chasing a white Mercedes Sprinter van after the driver Ryan Maloney, aged 29, got ut of his vehicle and confronted him on the Wilby Way roundabout, near Wellingborough.

Northampton Crown Court heard Richardson was driving a Honda Civic and dashcam footage from Maloney’s vehicle shown to the court revealed how Richardson repeatedly overtook and then braked to a standstill.

As Maloney attempted to get past his car, Richardson moved his vehicle towards him, forcing the van on to the wrong side of the road.

At one point, Maloney narrowly avoided a collision with people waiting at a bus stop as he attempted a U-turn to try to get away from Richardson.

Maloney was also forced to take a roundabout in the wrong direction and his van was damaged in a minor collision between the two vehicles during the five-minute incident.

Maloney, of Furzton, Milton Keynes, pleaded guilty to using threatening words or behaviour and he was sentenced to 40 hours of unpaid work.

Her Honour Judge Adrienne Lucking QC, sentencing, said Richardson, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, had pursued a “persistent course of bad driving.”

Richardson was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for two years. He must complete 80 hours unpaid work. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
