Christopher Dunne, aged 28, gained access to a house in Grange Park in the early hours of October 6 last year.

Northampton Crown Court heard the couple who lived in the house, including a woman who was eight-and-a-half months pregnant, was upstairs asleep at the time of the burglary.

Jonathan Eley, prosecuting, said Dunne was caught after a woman responded to a witness appeal put out by the police.

Mr Eley said the woman recalled hearing Dunne, who also lived in Grange Park, having a loud argument with his mother in the early hours of the morning on the night of the burglary.

The witness said Dunne was covered in mud, and she found an HDMI cable near the rear of his property that she handed over to police.

Dunne was arrested, and a search of his home revealed a purse, bank card and Apple box belonging to the couple whose house was burgled.

A pair of trainers owned by Dunne were also matched to a footprint found in the kitchen of the house that was burgled.

Mr Eley said the burglary had caused the couple distress, and they now had constant fears about home security.

The court heard that Eley, who pleaded guilty to burglary, had committed the crime to fund a drugs habit.

Her Honour Judge Adrienne Lucking sentenced Dunne to 10 months in prison. He will serve at least half in jail before being released on licence.
