If the plans are approved, building work is likely to start early in 2017.

It will form part of an expansion of 3,000 homes, shops, schools, public houses, restaurants and open spaces in west Northamptonshire.

Councillor Mary Markham, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “This is part of a new era for social housing in Northampton and a great opportunity for us to provide a significant number of council houses in a very cost-effective way.

“As a previous cabinet member for housing, I became acutely aware of the real shortage of affordable housing that we have in Northampton.

“It is really pleasing that we have been able to find a way of providing 100 great new homes for families alongside the schools and the other facilities that a community needs.”

As well as providing new social housing, the new homes would give the council an income stream.

There would also be a one-off payment from the new homes bonus, and from section 106 money paid by developers, to support the cost of infrastructure when new homes are built.
